BIRKA Warrior 12" x 20" Pillow
Viking Sheepskin Skinnfell by Amika Ryan
Fierce - Balanced - Invigorating
BIRKA ⚔️ The warrior
A nod to the great warrior buried in the 10th-century tomb in the Viking town of Birka, Sweden…
Turns out this great warrior was a woman!
Her tomb was filled with a trove of weapons, including a sword, spear, shield and two horses, as well as a game board likely used to map out military strategies.
Design and Mythology
Our Birka line represents the balance of masculine and feminine energies. Designs combine both fluid, round shapes along with shapes that are sharp and abrupt - often in high-contrast colors.
This hand-sewn and hand-stamped pillow features Viking era Jörmungandr (the Midgard Serpent), two triquetra, one on each side, and traditional skinnfell boarder representing water and earth.
In Viking Mythology, Jörmungandr was tossed by Odin into the great ocean that surrounds Midgard. The serpent grew so large that it was able to surround the earth and grasp its own tail. When Jörmungadr releases its tail it will unleash Ragnarök – the end of the world – during which the serpent and Thor will kill one another.
The triquetra is a pagan symbol related with the Valknut (the warrior's knot), a symbol associated with Odin. It symbolizes Odin’s power to lay bonds upon the mind, turning men helpless in battle, or making them fearless and filled with battle-madness, intoxication, and inspiration.
